Does Viagra Work for Premature Ejaculation?

So, does Viagra work for premature ejaculation and does it help you last longer in bed? Is it effective in delaying orgasm? Should you use it?

This article covers one of the most common questions: Does Viagra cure premature ejaculation? In order to understand if it really works, it is important to know what Viagra is and how it works.

Let’s start from the basics.

What is Viagra?

Viagra is a brand name of the prescription drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). It contains sildenafil which is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of ED. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor and it works by increasing blood flow to the penis.

Erectile dysfunction is a medical condition where you lose the ability to have or maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. Viagra (or sildenafil) helps you have an erection by increasing blood flow to your penis. When the blood flow increases, it makes your penis harder.

Viagra is approved for usage for men aged 18 and above. It is an oral medicine that comes in the form of tablets of 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. You need a prescription to buy Viagra. Your doctor will tell you which strength to use, how often to use, and when to stop taking these tablets.

When it comes to treating ED, Viagra does a good job. Several clinical studies have found that men who use Viagra have a better erection in as much as 83% of men on average. This makes it one of the most effective drugs for erectile dysfunction.

But does it work for premature ejaculation too?

Research on Viagra for Premature Ejaculation

Viagra is only approved for erectile dysfunction. And there is no FDA-approved drug for premature ejaculation (PE). Does this mean you can’t use Viagra for PE?

Well, it depends.

There are different studies that show mixed results. Here is what the research says:

  • Using Viagra for at least a month is found to improve premature ejaculation by 60% and sexual satisfaction by 81%. (No More PE)
  • Taking sildenafil 50 mg 45 minutes before sex along with massaging lidocaine-prilocaine cream on penis 15 minutes before sexual intercourse increases ejaculation time by 86%. (No More PE)
  • A double-blind clinical study found that sildenafil increases ejaculation time and sex satisfaction and decreases anxiety. (No More PE)
  • A double-blind study of 31 men who were suffering from lifelong PE without any symptom of erectile dysfunction found that using sildenafil (50 mg) before sexual intercourse increased ejaculation time from 1-15 minutes in 90% of patients. (Abdel-Hamid, 2001)
  • Using sildenafil at least one hour before sexual intercourse was found to increase ejaculation duration by 5.33 minutes. These results were retrieved after using sildenafil for 6 months. (Salonia, 2002)
  • In an open-label clinical study, men were given 25-100 mg sildenafil at least one hour before sexual intercourse for 3 months which resulted in a 97% increase in sexual satisfaction. (Chen, 2003)
  • A review study found encouraging evidence supporting the role of sildenafil in curing premature ejaculation in men. (Chen, 2007)
  • There are different mechanisms of how Viagra can be used to treat premature ejaculation but it still needs further investigation and research as we have little scientific evidence. (Abdel-Hamid, 2009)
  • Viagra helps in the modulation of the contraction of the seminal vesicle which is one of the three phases of ejaculation. (Orhan, 2006, Uckert, 2009, and Birowo, 2010)
  • Use of Viagra increases confidence in men, sexual satisfaction, and perception of ejaculatory control. However, it wasn’t found to increase intravaginal ejaculation latency time. (McMahon, 2005)
  • When compared with paroxetine and squeeze technique in a 6-month clinical study, Viagra was found more effective in delaying ejaculation. (Wang, 2007)
  • PDE5 inhibitors including Viagra were found to increase ejaculation time and erection quality and strength in men suffering from lifelong premature ejaculation. (Gökçe, 2011)
  • A single-blind placebo-controlled study found that Viagra significantly improved sexual satisfaction in men who had premature ejaculation for more than a year. (Gameel, 2013)
  • Single-blind placebo-controlled clinical study of 150 patients found that sildenafil and dapoxetine when taken together for 6 weeks significantly improve intravaginal ejaculatory latency time and sexual satisfaction in men. (Abu El-Hamd, 2018)
  • Viagra is the ideal choice for patients who are suffering from both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation but the research on its use to cure PE only is limited. (Jannini, 2011)
  • When Viagra is combined with an antidepressant (e.g., dapoxetine), it works better than Viagra alone in increasing ejaculation time and control in men suffering from premature ejaculation. (Bai, 2005 and Men 2016)
  • A meta-analysis found that Viagra is effective in treating premature ejaculation and when it is combined with an antidepressant (SSRI), it gets even more effective. (James, 2017)
  • Viagra is effective and has a positive role in the management of premature ejaculation without erectile dysfunction but it has acceptable side effects. (Krishnappa, 2019)

Does Viagra Work for Premature Ejaculation?

Yes, it does.

The studies reveal a few things as discussed above:

  1. Viagra is effective in treating premature ejaculation when the patient is suffering from both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation
  2. Using Viagra alone for premature ejaculation may or may not help with or without side effects
  3. The effectiveness of Viagra to treat premature ejaculation can be increased significantly when used with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which is a class of drugs used as antidepressants such as sertraline
  4. More clinical studies and research need to be done in this area.

So, you can use Viagra to last longer in bed and it might work for you. However, you need to consult your doctor. It isn’t recommended to use Viagra for PE without a prescription.

Should You Use Viagra to Last Longer in Bed?

There are a lot of clinical studies that show Viagra significantly increases ejaculation duration and can help you last longer in bed.

For example, BlueChew is a well-known online brand that sells chewable ED tablets including sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil. BlueChew also helps men last longer in bed based on customer reviews and scientific studies.

Since ED medicines aren’t approved by the FDA for PE and only a small number of studies have established this relationship, therefore, it isn’t always a good idea to use Viagra to cure premature ejaculation and last longer in bed.

Only use Viagra if your doctor has prescribed it for premature ejaculation.

How to Last Longer in Bed?

The best way to last longer in bed and delay ejaculation, according to research, is to use desensitizing products such as delay sprays, wipes, and oils. Research shows that 36% of men suffering from PE say that desensitizing products are most effective in delaying ejaculation and help them last longer in bed:

36% of Premature Ejaculation Patients Rate Desensitizing Products as the Most Effective Treatment Method

For example, you can use VigRX delay spray which is an all-natural numbing spray with zero side effects. It uses benzocaine as a numbing agent which is safer and has minimal side effects as compared to lidocaine.

You can also try other desensitizing products such as delay wipes, creams, oils, and gels to delay ejaculation. Besides, using OTC premature ejaculation pills is also a good idea to last longer in bed.

Avoid using Viagra to cure premature ejaculation as it isn’t meant to be used for delaying ejaculation. When you have other options available (that are more effective and safer than Viagra), why use Viagra?

Remember, Viagra is only approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Using it for any other reason isn’t recommended until we have enough scientific evidence for it.
